Marina Centre

GREAT YARMOUTH

The new £26m Marina Centre, on the Golden Mile at Great Yarmouth, is a catalyst for future investment and an important community hub. The improved health and fitness facilities give a year-round boost to the resort and vital visitor economy.

The centre offers a six-lane 25m swimming pool, learner pool and aqua play with flumes, a 120-station gym with panoramic views of the beach, a 4 court sports hall, 10m indoor climbing zone, 3 studios and community spaces.

The new Marina Centre will be looking to employ around 50 people, and replaces the former out-dated 1980s centre, which was demolished in early 2020.

From the main entrance on Marine Parade, an internal route leads through the heart of the building to a café, linking the promenade to the beach and an outdoor performance space. The internal walkway is partly naturally lit. The gym & fitness studios are visible from the street. The climbing zone, leisure water & café are visible from the beach.

The soft launch takes place 5th August, with the official launch over a gala weekend Saturday 3rd – Sunday 4th September 2022.

Challenges

The tender was highly competitive, so optimisation of the panel layout was critical to securing the job.

The SFS package was installed by others, so very close coordination and precision were required.

The marine location, subject to assault by salt water, high winds and sand, required a particularly resilient panel specification.

The architect’s intention was to reflect the sandy beach and deep blue of the sea in the design of the new Marina Centre.

The design called for stunning curves on the beach façade: in gold panels over the curtain waling and in blue panels over the main hall.

Solutions

A2O worked intensely on the panel layout to reduce wastage and minimise environmental impact.

A2O used Revit to set out the subgrid, and top hats in the install, for seamless integration with the SFS.

VitraDual was chosen as a non-combustible cladding system, which is durable and highly impact resistant and weather resistant.

VitraDual Gold Metallic and Ocean Blue panels were ideal for this building, coined as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile.

Attention to detail by designers and installers achieved a very wide smooth high level gold panel curve and a declining blue curve to the south end.
